Our 6-week summer program- Playing and Learning Uphill through Summer (Summer PLUS)

BRAAC offers a 6 week Summer PLUS Program that is specifically structured to meet the individual needs of children with unique learning challenges, including learning disabilities and autism. The summer PLUS program is a 4 day per week program from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday. Fridays are set aside for Social Skills Groups.

Learning Disabilities Program:

Students have a variety of activities that help increase their learning, as well as provide consistent learning opportunities throughout summer. The mornings are set aside to target specific learning needs using an individualized multi-sensory approach. Much time is spent on reading, spelling and math skills. Intensity is key during the hours of 8:30 a.m.-11:00a.m. The hours of 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. are used to facilitate social skills, organizational skills, utilize learning with computers, and attend activities which further promote learning.  Click here for LD Summer Program Application

Autism Program: NOW FULL

Each class is divided according to age and includes 4-6 typical peer models and two to three children with autism who have one on one “coaches.” The autism students target IEP goals, or goals determined by our program directors in conjunction with parents using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) as the premise for all learning. Each week has a different theme and activities are planned around these themes. Of course, data is collected and analyzed to determine the effectiveness of our approach with students.                                     Click here for Autism Summer Program Application

Peer Model Program:

This program allows typical functioning children to participate in our fun-filled summer program, while serving as role-models to children in the Autism Program.  Typical peer models ages 3-14, love the interactive play, crafts, music, field trips, pet therapy, etc.  They also learn about children with challenges and how to love and accept them.     Click here for the Peer Model Application

Summer PLUS Social Group:  NOW FULL

For the entire 6 week Summer PLUS Program, there are 2 classrooms designed specifically for High Functioning Autism (HFA) and Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) ages 6-14 (divided according to age).  These classes intensely focus on certain social deficits which are determined by consultation with the parents and/or school districts.  Areas such as how to get in with a group, reading emotions, body space awareness, appropriate comments to peers and adults, body language, self control, coping skills, voice tone, etc., are covered on a DAILY basis while at camp.  Targeted themes are covered WEEKLY, such as parties, telephone etiquette, restaurant etiquette, etc.  Weekly outings occur during the summer weeks to practice what we learn!  The ratio is usually 2:1 (child:adult).  BRAAC staff utilizes video modeling, role play, documentation and practice through activities.  Click here for Autism Summer Program Application
